After a treacherous boat ride, Nadine arrived in Italy where she decided to try and escape. She ran to a nearby village and used the few coins she had been given to buy some food. The shopkeeper who sold it to her noticed that Nadine did not speak English and suspected what had happened to her. Later, the shopkeeper saw that Nadine had not left, so she called a local shelter. As a result, Nadine was able to leave the harsh life of sexual exploitation and human trafficking. Since then she has been married to a local and was able to be reunited with her son.Nadine is part of the 1-2% of trafficked victims in Europe who are rescued. Yet even those who do survive suffer terrible effects from their experience of exploitation. They may have health, emotional, psychological, and spiritual problems because of what they’ve been through and they may continue to receive threats to their family or own wellbeing. This is why it is so important for victims to receive adequate care and support. If you would like information about how you could make a difference in the lives of these men, women, and children, check out our “Get Involved” page.
